SEER2 vs SEER: SEER2 is the updated efficiency standard the Department of Energy phased in starting January 2023. It tests under a higher external static pressure (the M1 standard), which produces ratings roughly 4.5% lower than the old SEER number for the same equipment. A SEER 14 unit is approximately SEER2 13.4. Federal minimums in 2026: SEER2 13.4 in the North; SEER2 14.3 in the Southeast and Southwest. Anything below the regional minimum cannot legally be installed new.

Bigger SEER2 numbers cost more upfront — sometimes a lot more. The honest answer to "is it worth it?" depends on your climate, your utility rate, and how long you plan to stay in the home. This calculator gives you the math; the underlying judgment call is yours.
